Monthly outlook for March
Well, I know I am tired of SNOW and cold weather!!! I bet you are too. This month will bring BIG changes to LKA. All of the fish will put on their game faces and start their move to shallower water in search of food. This is PRE SPAWN!!!!!!!!!!! Just remember, if you are fortunate enough to catch one of Lake Anna's HAWGS, please practice CPR. CATCH-PHOTO-RELEASE
BASS-Right now, the most popular fish on the lake is still thawing out. This will change on a daily basis. Their have already been some impressive catches this year. Good friend, Gary Cramer, caught a 9.11lb BUCKET MOUTH on sat Feb 27 in a Championship Teams Tournament. Way to go G-MAN!!!!!!! MOst of the bass will be caught on suspending jerkbaits this month. My favorite are Lucky Craft Pointers. But, there are many jerkbaits out there that will work. Rattling Rouges, Husky Jerks & Bass Pro XPS Jerkbaits are just a few of them. Fish these with a twich-twich-pause retreive. The pause is the key, play around with it to see how long the fish wants it to just sit there. Jig & Pig combos, spinner baits, shakey heads & swim baits will catch their fair share of fish this month. Just remember, early in the month SLOW is the key. You can pick up the pace as the month goes on.
STRIPER-The Specks will be on the move soon, feeding heavily and getting ready for the spawn. You will be able to catch them on bridge pilings, rock piles & Deep Brush all month. If the water hits the 45 degree mark, they will start to move up shallow. Small minnows, grubs, tubes and even spoons will fill your cooler this month. Good places to start looking is Stubbs Bridge, Holiday Mill Bridge and the 522 Bridge in the North Anna. The will be in the 10-25 foot range early in the month and move up shallower as the water begins to warm. Crappie-The LINESIDES will start to make their spawning run up lake about midmonth. We are about 3 weeks behind because of mother nature and the hard water she made for us this year. Look for the BIRDS. Usually, the stripers are not far from them. You will be able to catch them around the splits early and start moving up into the rivers about mid March. Terry's Run is always a good place to catch them as well as up around Duck-in-Hole Creek, Goldmine Creek & Waddy's. Sassy Shads, Berkley Ripple Tails, Sea Shads and live bait will catch them all month. Good Luck!!!!!!
Water Temps Dike 3- 50 degrees in the current, dropping to the mid to upper 40's out side of the current. Mid Lake- 38-42 Up lake mid 30's and still frozen in some places Lake Level- 8" HIGH
